My History Homework

My History Homework, by Mimi in Year 7

My homework was to create a piece of art showing the need to improve transport in the 18th century. So I decided to make a sculpture of Josiah Wedgwood crying at his pottery.

Josiah Wedgwood was a famous potter and would often move his pottery by horse and carriage. Back then the turnpikes (roads) were rough and bumpy and set an unstable ride for the pottery in the chest so a lot of it would be broken. For example, if Wedgwood was transporting the pottery to London it would probably be about £600 in travel and damaged goods. My sculpture is representing Josiah Wedgwood’s feelings towards a better method of transport. This lead Josiah to invest his profits into building the first canal networks in 1769.
